Sky News presenter Sophy Ridge called out Donald Trump’s lies during a powerful monologue on air.
This week, Trump accused Ukraine of ‘starting the war’ with Russia, as the US started talks with Putin to try and bring the conflict to an end.
On her Sky News show, Ridge pointed out that the idea Ukraine started the war is “not true, and it should be called out.”
She said it is the responsibility of journalists to “call out statements which are untrue.”
The news presenter continued: “On the 24th of February 2022 Russia invaded Ukraine. Facts matter. We have a responsibility to be clear when something is not true”
Ridge also mentioned Boris Johnson’s response to Trump’s comments, after the former prime minister said then president’s “statements are not intended to be historically accurate but to shock Europeans into action.”
She continued: “Facts always matter and this one matters more than most.
“It seems to me, if you’re trying to end a war, firstly, you have to face up to the truth of how it actually started”
Trump has also labelled Zelensky a “dictator”, comments which were widely condemned by European nations.
On Wednesday evening, Prime Minister Keir Starmer phoned Zelensky to pledge the UK’s support to Ukraine.
In a post on X, the Ukrainian president thanked Sir Keir for his support.
He wrote: “I spoke with UK Prime Minister @Keir_Starmer. The United Kingdom’s role in fortifying Europe’s defense and security is important for us. We discussed upcoming plans and opportunities.
“UK’s support matters indeed, and we will never forget the respect the British people have shown for Ukraine and our citizens. Thank you for your support.”
